The Church's Year: Lent A Lent on the Move We are always being told that we live in a secular age, but more people than ever before are going on pilgrimage. For centuries interest in walking in 'the way of St James' to the shrine at Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain had been on the decline. But in the last ten years numbers have shot up to over 100,000 per year. In the Middle Ages Canterbury was one of the four great pilgrim destinations, along with Santiago, Jerusalem and Rome. Pilgrimage is a metaphor for what faith is like. We are all on the move, travelling through time and space, journeying through life. We need to believe that our journey has a goal, and Lent is a good time to reflect on the ultimate meaning of our lives. So why not go on pilgrimage this Lent, either in reality or virtually? You can use our prayer trail which takes you round St Bride's Church (copies are available in the Lent booklet at the back of church) or you can choose a place that is special to you, where the divide between heaven and earth has grown thin through the prayers of the faithful. Or you can walk around your garden or your local streets, using some of the prayers printed below. Walk slowly, rest awhile, and let your vision be restored.
