St Bride's: Music - Lunchtime Recitals

Claudette Verhulst - piano

Tuesday, 14 July at 1:15pm - FREE ADMITTANCE - Retiring Collection

Claudette Verhulst - piano

During her master studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, the subject of her artistic research was the development of the piano recital. How and why did concert halls and audiences become as quiet as they are nowadays? What musical elements and habits have been lost and forgotten since 1840, when Franz Liszt played the very first piano recital in history?  Claudette will perform pieces by Liszt, Chopin and Brahms. She will let you see, hear and experience a piano recital as it used to be before. Long before, when coughing, laughing and reacting to the music was allowed. No silence, please!

Claudette Verhulst was born in 1989, in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. She started playing the piano at the age of ten, receiving lessons from Mieke van der Aalst. During the last year of secondary school Claudette was admitted to the pre-courses at the Tilburg Conservatory, where she studied with Bart van de Roer, one of the founders of the famous Storioni Trio.

One year after that she started her Bachelor study at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Her teachers there were Paul Komen (one year), and from then on, with intense feelings of gratitude, the late Rian de Waal. In June 2014, Claudette successfully finished her Masterstudies at The Royal Conservatory with David Kuijken.

Claudette won prizes at various contests, among which the Prinses Christina Concours and the SJMN competition. She followed masterclasses with Ronald Brautigam, Paolo Giacometti, Igor Roma, Ilona Timchenko and Dmitri Bashkirov. In The Netherlands and in Belgium Claudette performed in some of the bigger concert halls: Dr. Anton Philipszaal (The Hague - NL), De Philharmonie (Haarlem - NL), CC't Schaliken (Herentals - BE), Museé des Beaux-Arts (Liège - BE).

In November 2014 she performed with orchestra 'Brabant Sinfonia' conducted by Paul van Gulick pianoconcerto no. 23 KV 488 in A by Mozart.
