The Camerata was originally formed in 1984 as a string quartet but sometimes includes other instrumentalists to widen their repertoire. The ensemble is well known in the south of England and regularly performs in London. The group has been highly acclaimed for its committed and lively playing as well as their clear enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment in playing music together.

Rita French plays an Italian violin made by David Tecchler (an Austrian who worked in Rome) in 1741.

Martin Cannings' violin also Italian, was made in Montagnana by Eugenio Degani in 1836.

Jane Taunton's viola is English, made by William Forster Junior in 1793.

Christopher Cooper's cello is French and probably made by Paul Bailly in 1889.
