A chamber ensemble formed in 2015 by postgraduate students and fellows of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Ensemble Nova Luce has performed across London at venues including St James's Paddington, St Pancras New Church, St Mary-le-bow Church, and at the Orpheus & Bacchus Festival in France. They have received coaching from Jacqueline Ross and David Dolan and participated in masterclasses with world-renowned improviser, Robert Levin. As an ensemble, we aim to perform music for many different instrumental combinations from within the group.

Ensemble Nova Luce aims to explore unusual, or lesser known chamber repertoire as well as performing chamber arrangements of well-loved orchestral scale compositions. This objective stems from the historical, pre-recording convention of classical music being performed at home as a form of recreation. The music of the compositional titans such as Haydn and Mozart could then be played in an intimate setting among friends, enjoyed from the comfort of the living room.  Another art-form the ensemble explores is improvisation, which before the Twentieth Century was part of the performer's innate skill-set. It was expected of them and was the norm. It is now a much rarer occurrence to experience today in the concert hall, perhaps as a consequence of the birth of recordings, whereby the view that scores are 'fixed' and only that which is written down can be heard has grown. We aim to diverge from the idea of the 'perfect pristine' recording sound expected so much these days and explore the real joy of playing in a chamber setting, among friends, and we invite you to join us.
