River City Saxes is a saxophone quartet that plays music ranging from classical and contemporary works to light music and swing. Formed in October 2008, the quartet has fulfilled many engagements across London and Surrey, and is currently presenting a series of lunchtime recitals in London churches.
The leader of the quartet, Chris Hooker's career has been in Music Education both as a teacher and a manager. Chris now plays, arranges and conducts. He plays alto sax with the Linden Wind Orchestra, and is an occasional player with the Thames TV and Fulham Big Bands. Chris also plays music from the 20's to the 50's on sax and clarinet in 'Saxswing', and clarinet in the poetry and music duo 'Wind and Words'.
After studying at the Royal Academy of Music aged 15, Hale Hambleton was appointed principal Bass Clarinet in the London Symphony Orchestra. He was a founder member of the London Saxophone Quartet founded in 1969. In 1970 he joined the Sadlers Wells Opera Company, later to become English National Opera, as Principal Clarinet and remained with them for 40 years.
Having studied clarinet and saxophone at the Guildhall School of Music, Bob Lowdell worked professionally playing Clarinet and Saxophone in theatre pit orchestras up and down the country. He worked with people such as Ken Dodd, the Walker Brothers, Billy Fury, Val Doonican and many more. Bob took a second career as a music copyist, and over the years has turned out a huge number of scores for both TV and film.
Debbie King studied with Paul Harvey, founder of the London Saxophone Quartet, before continuing with her studies on clarinet, saxophone and flute at the London College of Music. She plays with the Central Band of the Royal British Legion, Paul Harvey's Clarinet Quartet and she manages her own band Chase Rhythm & Reeds.
