Pentecost 2017

Pentecost 2017

Posthumous portrait of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, painted by Barbara Kraft at the request of Joseph Sonnleithner in 1819

To celebrate Pentecost this year, we are delighted that the choir will be joined by
St Bride's Orchestra at the 11am Choral Eucharist on 4th June to perform
Missa Solemnis in  C major K337 by Mozart.

Completed in March 1780, Mozart's Missa Solemnis is the last of over fifty sacred works that he wrote for Salzburg, and indeed the last mass setting he ever completed. Salzburg masses were classed as either 'longa' or 'brevis'; but for this work Mozart seems to create a new form , and by using the title 'solemnis' he suggests its suitability for a grand occasion, with trumpets, timpani, oboe and bassoons added to the traditional strings.

His sponsor, the Archbishop, disliked lengthy compositions in the liturgy, and Mozart manages to keep to the brief - mostly! - but also suffuses his music with typical brilliance and drama; a vivacious Osanna, a strict, fugal Benedictus, and an Agnus dei that has a touch of 'Porgi amor' beauty. Come and join us and hear this wonderful work performed in our Pentecost Eucharist.
