"A sword will pierce your own soul too" (Luke 2: 35)

These words were spoken by the old man Simeon when Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the Temple for blessing. He was looking ahead to the pain of Good Friday. Parenthood is full of joy but is often painful too, just as life is full of joy and suffering. We are invited to stand with Mary at the foot of the cross and reflect on the painful experiences of our lives and try to meet them with faith.

Lord God, help me to face difficulty and suffering with courage and steadfast faith. May I be compassionate of others and open your presence at all times. Amen.
