"The truth will make you free" (John 8: 32)

Freedom is a precious value, especially in countries where there is repression. But it is not an absolute value. We need to ask what freedom is for, so that we use it wisely and responsibly. Freedom in Jesus' time meant freedom from slavery, and Jesus uses the idea in relation to sin. Through faith in God we can be forgiven, and through forgiveness comes freedom.

Lord God, free us from the slavery of sin that we may rejoice in your forgiveness and find new life. Amen.
