'There stood Jesus on the shore' (John 21: 4)
In 1962 the clarinettist Acker Bilk released a record called 'Stranger on the Shore'. Its haunting melody evokes the seashore, and the sense of watching someone about to depart. In the Gospel we picture a seashore with a figure standing beside a charcoal fire, inviting his friends to join him and eat. In all the comings and goings of our lives Jesus invites us to join him as his friends, to share his life, as the Stranger on the Shore.
Lord God, may we know you as our friend, so that in all the changes and chances of human life we may never feel alone, but be sustained by you. Amen
