'Beware of the scribes, who like to be greeted in the public square.' (Mark 12:38)
Mother Theresa dedicated her life to helping the poorest of the poor. Because of it she became a magnet for celebrities. A meeting with her was a status symbol. The Scribes in today's reading were the high profile A-listers of their time, always seen in the right places. Jesus' priorities lie elsewhere. You don't have to be famous for this story to speak to you. All communities organise themselves into a pecking order, and you are somewhere in it. Jesus reminds you that your status in the word's eyes doesn't express your worth as a human being.
Lord, help us to remember that human status is nothing in your eyes, and that all of us are your beloved children. Amen.
