'Each should give what he has decided.' (Corinthians 9:7)
It has been memorably said that money is a Sacrament of Seriousness. Almsgiving has always been an important aspect of Christian discipleship, and Paul encourages us to give thoughtfully and ungrudgingly. God, he says, loves a cheerful giver. What would it mean if we gave generously and not from what we have left over, but from what we need for daily living? The challenge of sacrificial giving is at the heart of these words.
Lord God, stir up in our hearts the spirit of generosity, and enable us to give sacrificially so that we can really make a difference to the world in which we live. Amen
