'I did not laugh, said Sarah.' (Genesis 18:15)
Sarah lied because she was afraid. She had laughed because she didn't believe God's promise. Laughter has sometimes had a bad press in the Bible, which often equates it with scorn. But when Abraham and Sarah have a son they call him Isaac, which means 'He laughs'.
Laughter is a precious part of human life, and goes with joy. St Teresa of Avila once prayed 'Lord protect us from sullen saints.' Long faces won't reveal God to anyone.
Lord, you have given us the gift of laughter. Send the spirit of joy in our hearts and fill us with attractive laughter in our lives. Amen.
