"They found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger." (Luke 2: 16)
The first visitors to the stable were hardly respectable. The shepherds were rough outsiders, nevertheless it is to them that the angels bring the message. When they arrive in Bethlehem they don't find a picture of respectability, because the baby is lying in a feeding trough. God uses the poor and the outsiders to speak to the first century world. Through whom is He speaking today with His subversive message?
Lord God, open our eyes to the true meaning of this festival, and help us to recognise you in those who live on the margins of society. Amen.
