Ash Wednesday: Choral Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes
We mark the beginning of Lent with a lunchtime Choral Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes on Ash Wednesday, 18th February at 1:15pm.
Last year’s Palm Sunday fronds have been burnt to ash for marking crosses. A sign of penitence and an echo of words from the Book of Genesis: ‘for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return’.
It is a service at which we are invited to reflect both upon our own mortality, and Christ’s offer to us of life in all its fullness. It engages with some of the most profound realities of human life, which renders it one of the most powerful and thought-provoking services of the year.
All are warmly welcome to join us as we enter the season of Lent together.
Music
The following music will be performed at the service by St Bride’s Choir and Organist.
Setting: Missa brevis – William Walton
Anthems: i) Emendemus in melius – William Byrd; ii) O Lord, in thy wrath rebuke me not – Orlando Gibbons
