The Artist
Kathy Chow is an award-winning Australian pianist based in Scotland. She made her debut piano recital aged fourteen at the Callaway Music Auditorium, raising funds for the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, Western Australia. As a soloist Kathy has performed in Australia, USA, China, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom, appearing at Barbican Hall, St James’s Piccadilly, St Mary’s Perivale, Birmingham Town Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, Hamer Hall, South Melbourne Town Hall, State Library of Victoria and Government Ballroom House of Western Australia. She has appeared at major festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Ribble Valley International Piano Festival, FIMTE International Festival of Spanish Keyboard Music, ANAM Set Festival and the International Holland Music Sessions.
Kathy is the First Prize winner of the 2018 Birmingham International Piano Competition and the Phillip Crawshaw Memorial Prize for an Outstanding Musician from Overseas at the 2019 Royal Overseas League Annual Music Competition in London. She was a semifinalist in the 2019 Jaques Samuel Intercollegiate Piano Competition, and has been a recipient of the 2019 Tait Trust Awards, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music’s Elizabeth McComas Piano Scholarship and the University of Melbourne’s Sir Arthur Sims Travelling Scholarship. Kathy has has participated in masterclasses with internationally renowned artists including Peter Frankl, Bernd Geotzke, Aquiles delle Vigne, Victor Rosenbaum, Joanna MacGregor, Steven Osborne and Ralf Gothoni.
Since relocating to Scotland her focus has been on chamber music, with Scottish violist Marsailidh Groat as part of the Cianalas Duo. The duo is passionate about using music as a tool for connection, education and wellbeing. Their name, Cianalas, is a Scottish Gaelic word meaning ‘a deep-seated sense of belonging to the place where your roots lie’, and the duo aims to create a feeling of groundedness, community and belonging through their projects.
Kathy is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where she obtained an MMus Concert Recital Diploma (Premier Prix) and Artist Diploma on scholarship.
