The Artist
Matthew Sear is an award‑winning, London‑born composer and multi‑instrumentalist known for his evocative works for solo instruments and small ensembles. He has been described as having “the measure of the music…a fine guitarist and composer with a chameleon‑like talent”. His work The America Suite was praised for containing “both the bustling New York Metropolis and hints of Southern Bluegrass”. Creations in Lockdown was called “a most imaginative release, and a poignant reaction to past and continuing world events.”
Matthew made his London classical‑guitar debut in 2006 at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, and has since performed extensively at venues including St John’s Smith Square, St James’s Piccadilly, University of Oxford’s Hertford College, and St Martin‑in‑the‑Fields’ New Music Series. His music has premiered at the Royal Academy of Music, the 1901 Arts Club and international festivals such as Edinburgh, Toronto and the Adelaide Fringe. His compositions have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and internationally across Spain and North America.
He founded The London Contemporary Guitar Series (2012–2020), bringing classical, jazz and fusion together in intimate collaboration with artists such as Howard Alden, John Etheridge, Tim Robinson, and Martin Vishnick. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal Society of Arts.
His recent works include The Tree of Life, noted for its spiritual resonance and varied instrumentation, and newer commissions such as The Nova Suite, Amigos, and his solo‑guitar piece For My Mother, which earned third prize in the 2025 Fidelio International Composition Competition. Matthew continues to compose, perform and expand the guitar repertoire, bringing both technical mastery and emotional depth to every project.
