A service of thanksgiving for the life of Gareth Smyth will take place at St Bride’s Church, the Journalists’ Church, on Thursday 14th March at 11:30am.

Gareth Smyth was a Middle East reporter for a number of media groups, including The Financial Times, The Guardian and the BBC.

His work as a freelance journalist in covering politics in Iran and Iraq in the 1990s led to his being appointed as the FT’s Lebanon correspondent and then, in 2003, its chief Iran correspondent, a position based in Tehran.

In 2009 he relocated to the west coast of Ireland, where he combined freelance journalism with his love of nature and the land.
