FUNERALS, MEMORIALS & DEDICATIONS

Memorial: Martin Townsend
A memorial service giving thanks for the life of Martin Townsend, journalist and newspaper editor, will take place at St Bride’s Church, the Journalists’ Church, on Thursday 15th October at 11:30am
After attending the London College of Printing, Townsend earned the epithet of youngest columnist in Fleet Street when he joined Today aged 25.
Seven years of freelancing eventually led him to the Mail on Sunday as showbusiness editor then to the role of editor of OK! magazine.
However, he was best known for the seventeen years he spent as editor of the Sunday Express from 2001, spearheading exclusives as well as running an award-winning campaign about mental health and helping to rescue a staff reporter held by the Taliban.
Among the out-pouring of tributes from colleagues he is remembered for his warmth, wit and generosity and as “a wonderfully talented journalist, a thoroughly nice human being.”
