Memorial: Dr Paul Knapman

Thursday 9th July, 2026, at 11:30 am

A memorial service giving thanks for the life of Paul Knapman, doctor and coroner, will take place at St Bride’s Church, on Thursday 9th July at 11:30am.

For more than three decades, Knapman presided over many of Britain’s most significant inquests as HM Coroner for Westminster, including those arising from the Iranian Embassy siege, the death of WPC Yvonne Fletcher, the Marchioness disaster, the Clapham and Ladbroke Grove rail crashes, the July 7 London bombings, and the deaths of high-profile figures including Paula Yates and Alexander McQueen.

Born in Torquay, Devon, he studied medicine before qualifying as a barrister. However, he decided upon a career as a coroner and in 1980 was appointed HM Westminster Coroner at just 35. He became known for his efficiency, independence, and commitment to helping bereaved families understand the inquest process. He helped set up the Coroners’ Courts Support Service, which he also chaired, and was widely respected for his public service.

Away from the courtroom, Knapman enjoyed boating in Devon, was active in the Royal Naval Reserve and the Westminster Dragoons, and served as Master of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries.
