Memorial: Rod Liddle
A memorial service giving thanks for the life of Rod Liddle, journalist and broadcaster, will take place at St Bride’s Church, the Journalists’ Church, on Thursday 12th November at 11:30am.
Liddle was born in Kent and grew up in London and Middlesbrough. After school he soon realised that fame and fortune did not lie with his punk band and became a journalist on the South Wales Echo.
He went on to study social psychology at the London School of Economics then became a speech writer and researcher for the Labour party.
He was a trainee producer at the BBC and in 1998 became editor of Today, boosting the programme’s reputation for investigative journalism and its audience figures.
During his extensive career, he also wrote for The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Spectator and The Sun and hosted his own Times Radio show.
He championed press freedom and his own writing was often uncompromising, provocative and controversial but his talent, insight and wit were widely acknowledged, as were his kindness, empathy and charm.
