The Artists
The first public performance of Mitra Alice Tham (MA, MM, PGDip RAM, B Mus. Hons, FLCM, LRAM, LMusA, ATCL) was at the age of three and her international debut at the age of eight in Japan. Originally from Malaysia, she has won many prizes at international competitions including: Rosario-Marciano Preis for the most eminent artist personality; Russischer Musikpreis for the best interpretation of Russian music; coveted title ‘The Excellent Player Award’ at the prestigious Asia Oceania Festival held in Thailand, and the ‘Young Millennium Pianist’ of Singapore.
Mitra has been the recipient of many scholarships whilst at the Purcell School and the Royal Academy of Music studying under Patsy Toh, and her Master’s degree in Performance at Mannes School of Music in New York studying with the distinguished late Cuban-American pianist Jacob Lateiner.
Mitra was awarded the Blüthner scholarship to study at the Leipzig International Sommer-Musikakademie, performing at the Göhliser Schloßer and Gewandhaus. For two consecutive years, she was awarded a scholarship by the Mozarteum Universität for their Sommer-Musicakademie, and a full scholarship to attend the international workshop of the America Institute of Music Society held in Graz, Austria.
Her international performances include solo, chamber music and concerto concerts, often exhibiting her special talent of composing live on stage where she is a skilled composer and arranger. She has performed to luminary dignitaries such as the late President of Singapore in the Singapore President Charity Concert and HRH The Prince of Wales, in a performance that was aired on national radio later. Prince Charles in an interview described the performance as ‘brilliant and excellent’.
Concerts include the London premiere of Leroy Anderson’s Piano Concerto, performing the complete Prokofiev Piano Sonatas in a 3-concert series in London and being invited to give a recital in conjunction with the Ecuador Embassy in UK. Mitra was an invited guest at a Reception ‘A Celebration of Young People in the Performing Arts’ given by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace. She was invited to Malaysia to give a Masterclass, Interview Forum and Concert where Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment led a standing ovation, followed with a commission to compose the anthem for a Malaysia national project: Melaka Gateway. This launch was presided by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, with Mitra on the podium conducting. Mitra is currently focusing on her research of Prokofiev and his motoric style.
