The Artists

Carla Rees works at the forefront of innovation in flute playing, working to develop the repertoire for her instruments through research, performance and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her career incorporates chamber music, solo work, improvisation, telematic performance and recording, including a discography of over 20 CDs. She is Artistic Director of rarescale, with whom she performs regularly both in the UK and internationally, as well as a member of the Goldfield Ensemble and Duo NewFLow. She leads an innovative online music degree at the Open College of Arts and teaches the flute at Royal Holloway University www.carlarees.co.uk

Gavin Stewart is a flautist, composer, and researcher with a particular interest in the realm of new music. He is currently completing his PhD which explores the Kingma system flute’s capabilities at retranslating the sounds and techniques of the Japanese shakuhachi through the curation of a new body of work for flute and electronics. Gavin has appeared as a guest artist in several international festivals and conventions including a residency with the International Contemporary Ensemble and currently plays with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group as part of their NEXT programme. He performs/improvises with The Thinking Minds Project, PRISM, and epoch ensemble.

Sophie Hooper recently graduated from Royal Holloway University with a 1st class honours degree in music. Sophie was an orchestral scholar for Royal Holloway’s Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and received a scholarship to attend ‘rarescale Summer School’ in 2019. She won Royal Holloway’s Concerto Competition in 2019, performing Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D Major in December of that year. Sophie is Senior Resident Tutor at Wycombe Abbey School, teaching music daily. She has recently been accepted onto the MMus Performance course at the Royal Academy of Music, starting in September 2021.

rarescale Kingma Ensemble was formed in 2019 as an independent ensemble comprising the professional members of rarescale Flute Academy. The group explores a diverse range of repertoire and incorporates both historical flutes and contemporary microtonal instruments made by Eva Kingma, the ensemble’s namesake. The ensemble works closely in collaboration with composers to develop new repertoire and seeks to demonstrate the versatile voice of the flute family.
