The Artist

Described as a musician of ‘real intelligence and richly communicative musicianship’ after a sold-out solo recital at the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, Berniya Hamie was awarded a full scholarship to study piano with Dina Parakhina and cello with Hélène Dautry at the Royal College of Music from September 2020, where she is a John and Marjorie Coultate Scholar. She studied at the RCM Junior Department with Ian Jones and Konstantin Lapshin (piano) and Leandro Silvera (cello) from 2014 and won the prestigious Senior Recital and Piano Prizes in 2020, Marjorie Humby Competition in 2015 and Barbara Boissard Junior Concerto Competition in 2016 – leading to a concerto performance with the RCMJD Sinfonia- and reached the Chamber Competition final in 2018 and 2019 with four chamber groups.

At the RCMJD she was regularly selected to perform in the public soloist and chamber concerts and twice performed as part of the RCM’s annual, live broadcasted Keyboard Festival (one of only a couple of junior students to be chosen). She was also selected as a junior recording artist and cover model for the 2017-18 ABRSM Piano Grade 1 Syllabus and gave the world premiere of Karen Tanaka’s ‘Masquerade’ at the ABRSM Spectrum 5 launch.

She has won numerous prizes for recital and concerto performances at festivals and competitions across the country including Worthing, Brighton Springboard, Hastings, and the Eastbourne Young Soloist Competition, where she won the Duke of Devonshire Award in 2019 and St Cecilia Bequest in 2020, prizes awarded to the most promising performers under 18. She has performed at prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Cadogan Hall, Purcell Room and Royal Festival Hall; her concerto highlights include performances of Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Brighton Youth Orchestra (as part of the 2018 Brighton Festival) and the Somerset County Youth Orchestra, and Chopin with the BYO String Ensemble. In 2021 she was selected as one of the first Tabor Piano Ambassadors for the Leeds Piano Competition.
