Geoff Howells writes: With a background as a chorister and an organ scholar followed by some years working professionally in church music, it is natural to have felt an affinity with sacred music – in my case especially that written before 1600. But it was never the whole story and since arriving in South Wales in 2007 in addition to a lifelong love of performing Bach’s music there has been the chance to diversify, to look across the centuries and around the world discovering along the way a wealth of amazing culture, inventive artistry and inspiration to experiment with new things. So, in addition to the repertoire that I love playing, it has been possible to create new music with the help of my friends who form the ensemble ‘UltraSepulChral’.
It is always a joy to play music in this wonderful place and today’s concert showcases two great works by Bach and an evocative and almost timeless meditation by the great Maltese musician, Charles Camilleri.
