The Artists

Lumas Winds are a dynamic young chamber ensemble based in London, striving to perform and promote works outside of the traditional canon. They are committed ambassadors for wind chamber music and the rich variety of repertoire that it offers, especially contemporary and British works. Primarily a wind quintet, Lumas also program duos and trios in many of their concerts highlighting the versatility of the instrumentation. The group were established in 2018, at which time the members were studying at the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music having all met during their time in the National Youth Orchestra.

After a short run of concerts in London and Cambridge, Lumas hit their stride in 2021 and were invited to be the Young Ensemble in Residence at the 2021 Corbridge Chamber Music Festival. Here they collaborated with pianist Benjamin Frith in Poulenc’s Sextet as well as with leading South Asian dance specialist Mayuri Boonham in family workshops exploring Bharatnatyam hand dancing. Following their performance at the coffee concert series at Champs Hill, West Sussex, the ensemble was invited to make its debut CD for the Champs Hill Record label. In August 2022 they recorded an eclectic programme of British Wind Quintets featuring works written in each decade from the 1960s to the 2010s due to be released around July 2023.

In March 2022, Lumas were finalists in the Royal Over-Seas League Competition, where they performed Arvo Pärt’s Quintettino and William Mathias’ Wind Quintet. They progressed from the semi-finals having played a programme of Bozza, Mozart, and Berio’s Opus Number Zoo. Very recently, Lumas Winds have been awarded a Tunnell Trust award for 2022 which enables them to embark on a tour of Scottish Music Clubs in 2023/24.

Lumas can be heard across London venues in the coming weeks including at St Bartholomew the Great with the City Music Society, at St Dunstan-in-the-West, and at St Saviour’s, Pimlico.
