The Artist

Douglas MacMillan is an organologist, music historian, and recorder player who founded the Oriana Consort (later Camerata Oriana), a chamber ensemble performing Elizabethan and Baroque music. He studied the recorder with the late Jeanne Dolmetsch.

Douglas’ academic work has led to three doctorates: a PhD from the University of Surrey (‘The Recorder 1800 ̶ 1905’), a DMus from the Royal College of Music (‘The Flageolet in England 1800 ̶ 1900’) and an Oxford DPhil (‘Octave Flutes in England 1660 ̶ 1900’). He has contributed over 20 articles on the recorder and flageolet to peer-reviewed scholarly journals, he has published three books as well as concert and literature reviews and has presented his research at international organological conferences.

His current research includes an investigation into the use of the historic use of the soprano recorder and a comparative study of the rise to prominence of the instrument across Europe between 1920 and 1950.
