The Artist
Oliver Macfarlane is an organist based in Guildford. His full-time music education began at Winchester School of Art followed by four years at the Royal College of Music where he gained his graduate and performing diplomas in both piano and organ. Oliver studied organ with Richard Popplewell, Gillian Weir and at the International Summer Academy in Haarlem, Holland. Recently he has embarked on further organ studies in French repertoire with Ben van Oosten in The Hague. His recitals have included the cathedrals of Bristol, Truro and Worcester, St Stephen’s Walbrook, St George’s Hanover Square and St Michael’s Cornhill. He is also a deputy organist for St Mary’s Church, Stoke D’Abernon and Christ Church, Esher in Surrey.
Oliver Macfarlane had a long career in broadcasting with the BBC. In Television Classical Music he was series editor of performance output where his portfolio of programmes included the BBC Proms, the prestigious Young Musician of the Year competition, the conducting series Maestro, concerts from the Barbican, and several opera and ballet relays from the Royal Opera House. In 2013 Oliver left the BBC to concentrate on playing the organ.
