The Artist

Augustin Cornwall-Irving is a lute, guitar and theorbo player from London. While studying as a guitarist at the Royal College of Music, he became interested in the expertly crafted music of the 16th and 17th centuries, leading him to undertake a Master’s Degree and an Artist Diploma in lute as David Laing Scholar, and as Ian Evans Lombe Scholar.

In 2018 he performed in the Anne Boleyn Music Book concert at the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, celebrating a treasured manuscript of early 16th century music held by the RCM, and gave a lecture recital on the history of the lute as part of the RCM Guitar Festival. The following year he performed in Emma Kirkby’s 70th anniversary concert at Dartington Hall alongside David Miller, William Lyons and Toby Carr, as well as performing for the first time with Emma Kirkby as part of the group Dowland Works.

Since then, he has performed regularly as a soloist and in a variety of ensembles, including performances at the RCM Museum, the RCM Performance Hall, Lewes Festival of Song, St John’s Smith Square, St Peter’s Belsize Park, and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 2020 he gave a solo lute recital for HRH The Prince of Wales at the Royal College of Music, as well as appearing on the BBC Radio 3 Early Music Show.

More recently, he recorded with the Taverner Consort for their 50th anniversary recording, and in 2022 he won first prize in the RCM Historical Performance Competition – as well as the Century Fund Prize and the Richard III Prize.
