The Artists
The Purcell School is a lively, vibrant and energetic community of young musicians united by a shared passion for music. We are home to around 200 teenagers from all over the world and have a longstanding international reputation for excellence. Thanks to the government’s Music and Dance Scheme, we break down barriers, ensuring that young musicians of significant potential have access to a world-class music education regardless of their financial circumstances.
Students benefit from instrumental lessons with exceptional teachers, masterclasses with internationally acclaimed artists, regular solo and ensemble performance opportunities, and a comprehensive academic education. They leave us with the skills and confidence to embark on their musical careers. Students routinely go on to top conservatoires and universities around the world, with alumni currently found in places including London, Birmingham, Cambridge and Yale.
Led by Mike Cavanagh, The Purcell School’s woodwind, brass & percussion departments are supported by expert specialist tutors who are distinguished performing artists. In 2025, The Purcell School launched a new initiative, ‘The Purcell School Brass Experience,’ a termly weekend development programme designed to invite talented young musicians from local communities and beyond. Aimed at students in School Years 5 to 12 with playing standards ranging from Grade 3 to 8+, the programme offers participants the opportunity to work closely with the school’s distinguished brass faculty and guest artists.
