The Artist
Thomas Hawkes was born in Paderborn, Germany, where he had his first organ lessons with Ulrich Schneider and Andreas Konrad. After spending two years learning with Jonathan Lilley at Ely Cathedral, he studied with Roger Tebbet at the University of York.
Having completed his BA and PgDip in 2017, he became organ scholar at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. After a year as a graduate organist at King Edward’s, Witley, Thomas spent a year as acting assistant director of music at St Davids Cathedral.
Following this, Thomas studied organ with Matthias Maierhofer and David Franke at the Hochschule Für Musik in Freiburg im Bresigau, Germany. At this time, he was also a regular accompanist for the Freiburg Cathedral choir under the direction of Boris Böhmann.
Since July 2024, Thomas has been Organist and Choirmaster at Cirencester Parish Church. Alongside this job, Thomas is the accompanist and guest conductor for Cirencester Choral Society.
Thomas has a busy recital career, with recent engagements including Temple Church, Bradford, Troyes and Westminster cathedrals, and the Neues Schloss in Stuttgart.
He has also performed BBC TV and radio and is featured on the St Davids Cathedral 2022 Christmas CD. He can be found on Instagram under the name: Wanderingorganist.
