Edible St Bride's steeple used on a wedding cake by a descendant of baker William Rich

The travelling spire

This week we had a quick visit from Becky Element and David Fellows. Becky and David were married in Coventry on 20th May 2017 but they had a very special part of St Bride’s with them on the day.

David is the fifth great grandson of William Rich, the baker responsible for the tiered wedding cake. William Rich was apprenticed to a baker near Ludgate Circus. He fell in love with his master’s daughter and, when he set up his own business at the end of his apprenticeship, won her father’s approval for her hand in marriage.

Rich wished to create a spectacular cake for the wedding feast, but was unsure how, until one day he looked up at the steeple of the church in which the marriage was to be held, and inspiration hit him: a cake in layers, tiered, and diminishing as it rose. And the rest is history!

When Becky and David discovered the connection with St Bride’s they asked if they could borrow a replica of the spire to put on their own wedding cake. We were more than happy to lend them the one model that we have but in the end it proved too fragile to use. Instead, they had one specially made for the occasion and as you can see from the picture, it was the perfect topping.

Becky and Dave, along with Becky’s daughter Poppy, came to hand deliver the spire this week and we were very happy to see them and wish them all the best for their future together.
