All Souls’ Service

Sunday 31st October at 5:30 pm

This year we shall again be holding a special service of choral music and readings for All Souls’ Day.

This is one of our most popular and most poignant services, at which we commemorate family, friends and loved ones who have passed away.

The church lights are dimmed, as we read the names of the departed aloud and light candles on the altar in their memories.

This service will also be made available online here at the service time, and on our pages at FacebookYouTube and SoundCloud. This will not include the reading of names but at the point this will be happening in church, we encourage you to light your own candle at home as an act of remembrance.

Dozens of living flames flicker in the church, symbolising our loved ones who are now held safe in the arms of God, even though they are beyond our reach. The choir sings the anthem Justorum animae which sets words from the Book of Wisdom:

“The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God,
and the torment of death shall not touch them:
They seem in the eyes of the unwise to be dead,
but they are at peace.”

If you would like someone to be remembered by name during this service, please contact our administrator

Music from St Bride’s Choir at this service:
Nunc Dimittis, H127 – Gustav Holst
Anthems: i) Justorum animae – William Byrd; ii) Sacred love – Georgy Sviridov
Organ Voluntary: Placare Christe servulis from Le tombeau de Titelouze Op 38 – Marcel Dupré
