FUNERALS, MEMORIALS & DEDICATIONS

Memorial: Chris Boffey
A memorial service giving thanks for the life of Chris Boffey, journalist, will take place at St Bride’s Church, the Journalists’ Church, on Thursday 19th March at 1:30pm.
Born in Manchester, Boffey’s journalism career began regionally but he soon arrived in Fleet Street, working his way through jobs on The Sun, Today and the Sunday Times before joining the Sunday Telegraph as chief reporter then news editor. He spent two years away from the papers as media adviser to Labour’s education secretary before returning to join the Observer then the Guardian.
In his 40 years of journalism he claimed he had been “threatened, shot at, firebombed, sued, asked to spy, investigated by M15 and taken the occasional drink” as he covered stories from the The Troubles and the Gulf War, to World Cups and Olympic games, and investigated gangsters, pop stars and killers.
He was unflappable, cheery, much-liked and respected by colleagues and helped and inspired many young journalists. Active in retirement, he continued to write and chaired the Journalists’ Charity.
