Memorial: Dermot Murnaghan
A memorial service giving thanks for the life of Dermot Murnaghan, journalist and presenter, will take place at St Bride’s Church, the Journalists’ Church, on Thursday 22nd October at 11:30am.
Murnaghan was born in Devon and raised in York and Ulster where he learned to tell both sides of a story. He studied history at Sussex University and journalism at City. Following spells at Channel 4, he began hosting news bulletins for ITV in 1992. During this time he announced the death of Princess Diana.
In 2002 he joined the BBC hosting Breakfast before a move to Sky News for sixteen years, where he announced another royal death, that of Queen Elizabeth.
He read the news with authority and pressed those in power when it counted which earned him a coveted Royal Television Society award and Newscaster of the Year.
He also hosted the popular quiz Eggheads, and The Big Story and Britain’s Most Wanted amongst others. His podcast Legends of News told the stories of those who read and helped shape TV news.
