Memorial: Keith McDowall
A memorial service giving thanks for the life of Keith McDowall, journalist and PR consultant, will take place at St Bride’s Church, the Journalists’ Church, on Thursday 11th June at 11:30am.
Born in South London, McDowall began his journalism career in local news and also worked ad hoc with The People, the Daily Mail and on three London evening papers. In 1955 he joined the Mail full time, becoming an industrial reporter in 1958. He left the paper in 1967.
His political affiliations led him to the media office at Whitehall, where he gained experience of Northern Ireland at the Home Office. This led to a role supporting Willie Whitelaw as Secretary of State during the period of direct rule and subsequently to the post of Director of Information.
After the Labour victory, he served Michael Foot helping create the Social Contract. In 1980 he became deputy director-general of the CBI, after which he set up a public affairs company.
In his later years he mellowed into the role of elder statesman and was a committed and active member of the Reform Club.
