Memorial: Michael Charlton
A service of thanksgiving for the life of Michael Charlton will take place at St Bride’s Church, the Journalists’ Church, on Thursday 27th November at 11:30am.
Michael Charlton was a reporter, interviewer and presenter, initially for ABC in Australia and then, after moving to the UK, for the BBC.
Charlton was the first face seen on public service television in Australia when ABC commenced TV broadcasting in 1956. He was also a renowned cricket commentator, covering numerous home and away Test series. Having successfully presented ABC’s Four Corners current affairs programme, Charlton was invited by the BBC in 1962 to join the Panorama team and among his first assignments were the Cuban missile crisis and the assassination of President Kennedy.
Charlton moved to BBC Radio 3 in the late 1970s, establishing a series of history programmes covering foreign policy issues since the Second World War.
