Memorial: Sir Andreas Whittam Smith
A memorial service giving thanks for the life of Sir Andreas Whittam Smith, financial journalist and editor, will take place at St Bride’s Church, the Journalists’ Church, on Thursday 17th September at 12 noon.
Sir Andreas was founding editor of the Independent when, as the first new national broadsheet for more than a century, it was launched in 1986.
He had had several roles in financial and economic journalism at the Financial Times, The Times, The Guardian and Investors’ Chronicle before an eight-year stint as city editor of the Telegraph from 1977.
After standing down from the Independent in 1994, he was appointed President of the British Board of Film Classification.
The son of a vicar, Whittam Smith was the First Estates Church Commissioner from 2002 – 2017, overseeing the Church of England’s investment portfolio.
