It was with deep sadness that the death of The Revd Canon John Oates was announced to the St Bride’s community last month. John was a dynamic, loyal and gregarious advocate for the church, he had an instinctive enthusiasm to do the right thing, founded on a life rooted in prayer.
John presided over a period of great turmoil for the newspaper industry, and his door was always open to support workers and proprietors alike. He arranged vigils for journalist John McCarthy and others held hostage in Beirut and remembered them in weekly prayers. John also helped organise a successful financial appeal for church works and supported the St Bride’s Choir as it developed into one of the foremost professional choirs in London.
Donations in John’s memory can be made to the Princess Alice Hospice which provided end of life care for both John and his beloved wife Sylvia.
