Dean of Westminster joins Guild of St Bride

Guild Sunday, 7th February, 2010

Member of Court & newly installed Guildsmen

The historically close relationships between St Bride's Church in London's famous street of the media - Fleet Street - and nearby Westminster Abbey, were strengthened when the Dean of the Abbey was installed as a member of the Guild of St Bride at the annual Guild Sunday Service on Sunday, 7th February.

The Very Rev John Hall joins a list of Guild Chaplains which include a number of senior clergy within the Church of England. The Rev Stephen Heard also became a Chaplain. They were installed by the Guild Master, Mr Vyvyan Harmsworth and welcomed by the Rector, the Venerable David Meara, who also introduced eight new members.

The final hymn at the ceremony, which formed part of sung Eucharist, was the resounding In the name of Christ we worship which was written by Canon Michael Saward, now retired, whose last position was Canon Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral, to mark the 50th anniversary of the re-dedication of St Bride's in 2007. Canon Saward, whose has written 109 hymns to date was in the congregation and heard it being sung for the first time. "I think it sounded pretty good," he said modestly.
